The stakes

Why reviews decide dental practice revenue

The digital front door to every dental practice is its review profile. Here's what's at stake.

82%

of dental patients pick a provider from the local pack

If you're not in the top 3, you're invisible. Star rating and review volume are the deciding signals.

$3,200

average lifetime value of a new dental patient

One flipped booking a week is a six-figure annual swing.

1 review

can suppress local pack visibility for months

Google's ranking model weights recent negative signals disproportionately.

How buyers decide

When a new dental patient decides

The crisis card above says 82 percent of dental patients pick a provider from the local pack. That means the decision happens on the map, from three listings, using the star rating and the two newest reviews. Most new patients never open a second website.

  1. 01

    The map pack glance

Three practices appear first. A rating a few tenths below the neighbours, or a fresh one-star showing in the preview, loses the tap. The patient never learns how good the rest of your profile is.

  2. 02

    The unnecessary-work accusation

Dentistry's specific fear is being sold treatment that was not needed. A review that says exactly that, even from someone who was never in your chair, confirms the fear and sends the patient to the next listing.

  3. 03

    The high-value case cross-check

Before an implant, aligner or full-mouth case, patients read everything and compare Healthgrades and Yelp against Google. A copied negative that appears on two sites reads as a pattern.

How we calculate this
  • Star-rating drag on click-through tapers and caps at 18%. Negative sentiment is scored as a share of your total review volume and caps at 20%. Both compound, then apply only to the ~55% of buyers who read reviews and act on them.
  • No correctly typed margin is available for this industry, so the model shows revenue only.
  • Benchmarks for dental practices come from the published sources listed below.
  • Estimates only. Every market is different.

Sources

  • ADA Health Policy Institute (restated by Pearl and PlainDentalCost), Survey of Dental Fees, national private-market averages (2024). Population-weighted national average of $3,075 for a dental implant (range $2,005–$5,255) and $1,606 for an implant-supported ceramic crown. Limitation: accessed through third-party restatements of the ADA fee survey rather than the ADA's own publication page, and fees vary widely by state.
  • Dental Economics, A comparative analysis of dental implant costs across major U.S. markets (2026). Median $4,000 for a complete single implant, $3,400 when placed by a specialist and $4,800 by a general dentist, from a 2025 survey of 278 practices. Limitation: convenience sample across six metro areas, not nationally representative.
  • Dental Intelligence, 2024 Annual Dentistry Benchmarks. Treatment-dollar case acceptance averages 39%–42%, with the bottom decile at 22% and the top decile at 58%–64%. Used as the close-rate input. Limitation: drawn from practices that run Dental Intelligence software, a self-selected sample.
  • Reputation Medics editorial note, Missing data note for full-arch and orthodontic case values (2026). No association or peer-reviewed source publishes a national average case value for full-arch (All-on-4) implant cases or complete orthodontic treatment. The commonly quoted $20,000–$45,000 per arch comes from clinic marketing pages, and one 2026 pricing report retracted its own braces figure as unsupported. Those job types are therefore absent from the table instead of estimated.
  • Reputation Medics editorial note, Missing margin data note for fee-for-service practices (2026). No association publishes a gross or operating margin for dental practices, med spas, clinics, senior living, law firms, advisory firms, brokerages, or hotels. The ADA publishes dentist net income, not a margin; AmSpa publishes revenue per med spa, not a margin; AICPA's margin figure sits behind its paid MAP survey. The fee or room rate on this page is treated as revenue, not profit. Read the figures as lost billings, not lost take-home.
  • BrightLocal, 2024 Local Consumer Review Survey. Star rating and review sentiment vs. click-through from search and maps. Used for the click-through drag curve.
  • Harvard Business School · Michael Luca, Reviews, Reputation, and Revenue. Peer-reviewed link between review sentiment and revenue. Used for the sentiment drag curve.

What the number above means

Lifetime patient math for a dental practice

The crisis card above puts a new dental patient's lifetime value at $3,200. A visible one-star does not lose one exam. It loses the exam, the hygiene recalls behind it, the restorative work that follows, and the family members who would have joined.

  • HIPAA prevents you from correcting the record publicly, so the review stands unanswered until a platform removes it.
  • Local pack ranking responds to review signals over time, and the crisis card above notes one review can suppress visibility for months.
  • Run the calculator above with your average case value and your actual close rate. The result is your practice's number.

Stop the leak at the review that causes it

Buyer psychology

What earns buyer trust in dental practices

When choosing a dental practice, consumers weigh authentic, high-volume reviews as the deciding signal between you and a competitor a single click away.

Recency wins

Buyers weigh reviews from the last 90 days most heavily. A stale 5-star profile still loses to a competitor with fresh momentum in dental practices.

Volume signals safety

Prospects use raw review count as a proxy for legitimacy. Below 25 reviews, most local buyers filter your listing out entirely.

Response builds trust

How you respond to a 1-star review says more than the review itself. Silence reads as guilt, measured accountability reads as leadership.

One bad review, filtered forever

A single unaddressed 1-star can suppress dental practices local pack rankings and cut click-through by 30% or more.

Compliance-first

ToS-aligned, defensible growth for dental practices

Every workflow, from response to removal filing, is built to keep your Dental Practices business on the right side of platform policy and consumer-protection law. We never post fake reviews, incentivize ratings, or violate directory terms.

The rules that apply to you

What the platforms and regulators actually say about dental practices

Every statement below is sourced. Read them before you decide how to handle a review.

45 CFR 164.508

HIPAA stops the one reply that would settle it

A dental practice cannot say "this person has never been in our chair" in public. Confirming or denying treatment is a disclosure. That single restriction is why a dental practice that gets a review from a non-patient has to use the platform's policy process rather than the reply box.

Source: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

Genuine experience required

Reviews from people who were never patients are reportable by policy

Google's contributions policy requires content to reflect a genuine experience with the business, and Yelp's guidelines say the same. Non-patient reviews, mistaken-practice reviews and former-employee reviews all fall under that ground.

Source: Google Maps Help

16 CFR Part 465

Buying reviews to bury a bad one is a federal violation, not a shortcut

Since October 21, 2024 the FTC rule on consumer reviews bans fake reviews, insider reviews presented as customer reviews, and paying for positive or negative reviews, with civil penalties available per violation. For a dental practice that leaves two lawful moves: earn real reviews, and report the ones that break platform policy.

Source: U.S. Federal Trade Commission, 2024

Policy grounds only

Google removes reviews that break a policy, not reviews you dislike

Google's own help documentation says any review can be reported but only content that violates its policies is eligible for removal. That is why a case starts by matching the wording to a named policy: fake engagement, off topic, impersonation, harassment, personal information or conflict of interest.

Timeline

What happens after a dental practice opens a removal case

Nothing here is a promise of removal, because that decision belongs to the platform. Most Google removals take 7–21 days; Yelp and other platforms typically take 60–90 days. Complex cases use a Custom Care Plan with their own timeline.

  1. Day 0 · Free scan and eligibility read

We pull the live review or page from Google and Yelp and Healthgrades, quote it verbatim, and say which policy it breaks. If nothing breaks a rule we say so and take no fee.

  2. Days 1-3 · Filing without chart detail

The report argues the policy ground and cites the exact wording. No chart, appointment or billing detail goes into it, so nothing about a real patient becomes public while the case runs.

  3. Platform moderation

Google evaluates reports against its prohibited and restricted content policy; most Google removals take 7–21 days. Yelp and other platforms typically take 60–90 days. The platform decides the timing.

  4. Days 10-21 · Appeal where the first report is declined

A declined report is not the end. Google provides an appeal route for reviews it decides to keep, and a second filing that cites a different policy ground and better evidence is often what moves it.

  5. Day 30 (Google) / Day 90 (Yelp & other platforms): refund deadline

Upfront fees are refunded after our review if a Google review is not removed within 30 days of payment, or a Yelp review or other-platform item is not removed within 90 days. No claim or form is required. Refunds are issued within 5 business days of the deadline.

Before you start

What a dental practice needs before starting a removal

The start form takes a few minutes if you have these four things in front of you. Nothing else is required to open the case.

  1. The exact link to the review or page

On Google, open the review, use the three-dot menu and choose Share to copy its direct link. On Yelp, use the share icon under the review. For a harmful page, paste the full URL from the address bar.

  2. Your business name exactly as it appears on the profile

Copy it from your Google Business Profile, including 'DDS' or 'DMD' if the listing reads that way. Multi-location groups need the specific location name that carries the review.

  3. Why the item breaks the platform's rules

One or two sentences is enough. Typical grounds for a dental practice: the reviewer was never a patient, the review names a hygienist or assistant with accusations about their character, a former employee posted it, or it describes another patient's treatment.

  4. Your preferred payment option

Pay upfront: $397 for Google, $697 for Yelp, or $497 for another site or harmful link. Pay upon removal: save a card, pay $0 today, and pay $50 more per item only once each removal is documented. No refund term applies because nothing is charged before removal. Pay upfront. If the specific Google review is not removed within 30 days of payment, or a Yelp review or other-platform item is not removed within 90 days of payment, we refund the removal fee to your original payment method. No claim or form needed. We review and issue it within 5 business days.

New York rules for dentists

New York has no standalone dental board agency. The State Education Department’s Office of the Professions licenses dentists, and its free online search shows a license number, the original license date and current registration status.

A New York license lasts for life unless the Board of Regents revokes, annuls or suspends it. To practice, the dentist must also keep a current registration and pay the fee, which means “unregistered” and “unlicensed” describe two different situations.

Our view: when a review calls a dentist unlicensed, pull the public record first. A claim the state record contradicts is a factual dispute we document for the platform, and you never have to argue it in a public reply.

Sources

Illinois rules for dentists

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation licenses dentists, hygienists, dental specialists and sedation permit holders across the state. Its License Lookup is approved by The Joint Commission and NCQA as a primary verification source, and single-license results refresh daily.

The Illinois Dental Practice Act requires a written notice in at least 14-point font whenever a dentist or staff member discusses or hands out a third-party financing application.

Our view: billing fights show up often in Illinois dental reviews. If a reviewer says the office hid financing terms and you hold the signed notice, keep the reply short and patient-free, then let us take the documented dispute to the platform.

Sources

Texas rules for dentists

The Texas State Board of Dental Examiners reported 26,012 active dentist licenses statewide in its August 2024 appropriations request, alongside 19,566 hygienists and 45,609 dental assistants.

The board’s public license search shows status plus any public disciplinary action or remedial plan, and the full licensee list is published and refreshed daily.

In 2019 a Dallas practice, Elite Dental Associates, paid the HHS Office for Civil Rights $10,000 and took on a corrective action plan after revealing patient information while answering reviews on social media.

Our view: a Texas dental office has the state record on its side and federal privacy law against any detailed reply. Use the first and respect the second by reporting policy-breaking reviews instead of debating them.

Dental Practices review removal FAQs

Can a dental practice remove a review from someone who was never a patient?+

Yes. Google's and Yelp's rules require a genuine experience. We document that no appointment, chart or payment record exists for the reviewer and file it under the not-a-real-experience policy without including any patient details.

A review says we recommended unnecessary work. Can it come down?+

If the person was a patient and disagrees with a treatment plan, that is an opinion and it stays. If the person was never seen, or the review makes a specific false factual claim such as work being performed that was not, there is a policy basis to report. The free scan tells you which case you have before you pay.

Does a removal affect our Google ranking?+

No. A successful policy report removes one review and its rating contribution, with no ranking penalty. What hurts ranking over time is a rising share of one-star reviews, which is what removal addresses.

How long does dental practices review removal typically take?+

Most Google removals: 7–21 days. Yelp and other platforms: typically 60–90 days. The platform decides the timing. Complex cases involving defamation, legal escalation, coordinated attacks, or many items across platforms are quoted individually through the Custom Care Plan, with their own timeline.

Do you remove legitimate negative reviews?+

No. We only pursue reviews that violate a platform's Terms of Service: fake, off-topic, defamatory, extortive, or conflict-of-interest. Legitimate complaints are addressed via a response strategy, not deletion.

Is this compliant with FTC and platform policy?+

Yes. Every workflow (outreach, invitations, responses, removal appeals) is aligned with the FTC Endorsement Guides and each platform's ToS. We keep audit-ready logs of every action.

What does dental practices review removal cost?+

Pay upfront: $397 Google, $697 Yelp, or $497 other sites and harmful links.

What if a removal request is denied?+

We escalate through documented appeal channels. Upfront fees are refunded after our review if a Google review is not removed within 30 days of payment, or a Yelp review or other-platform item is not removed within 90 days. Pay upon removal: save a card, pay $0 today, and pay $50 more per item only once each removal is documented. No refund term applies because nothing is charged before removal.

Sources for Dental Practices+

Every statistic cited inline on this page is drawn from the following industry sources. Citations remain inline alongside each figure so context stays with the claim.

  1. Confirming that someone is a patient, or referencing their treatment, in a public reply is a disclosure of protected health information without authorization. This is why a clinical reply is not a safe answer to a false review.

  2. The policy list a removal report has to cite: fake engagement, off-topic content, impersonation, harassment, personal information and conflicts of interest.

  3. Federal rule effective October 21, 2024. Bans fake or AI-generated reviews, reviews by insiders presented as customers, and buying positive or negative reviews. This is why removal has to be argued on policy grounds instead of countered with bought reviews.

  4. Google's own documentation of the report route: any review can be reported, only reviews that break a content policy are eligible for removal, and the decision is Google's.

  5. How do I report a review?Yelp for Business Support Center

Yelp states that reported content is evaluated by its moderators and that the evaluation may take several days, with an email sent when it is done.
