The stakes

Why reviews decide restaurant revenue

How buyers decide

When a diner decides on a restaurant

The crisis card above cites the Harvard finding of a 9 percent revenue swing per Yelp star. Diners decide in the time it takes to scroll a map. The rating filters the list, the newest review and the top photo decide the table.

  1. 01

    The map scroll

Diners open the map, look at ratings, and tap the one with the best recent photo and no fresh one-star in the preview. A single visible complaint about food poisoning or a hair in the dish loses the tap before the menu is opened.

  2. 02

    The safety accusation

Food poisoning and cleanliness claims are the reviews people remember and repeat. Many come from diners who ate several places that day, and some from people who never ate with you at all. Both are worth reporting when the review describes a visit that did not happen.

  3. 03

    The named-server attack

Reviews that name a server or manager and accuse them of racism, theft or drunkenness spread through local groups and follow the employee. Unsupported accusations against a named individual are a harassment matter under platform rules.

What the number above means

Cover math for a restaurant

The crisis card above notes one star can drop OpenTable priority ranking, and weekend priority is where margin covers come from. A visible false review does not lose one table. It lowers the number of people who tap your listing every night until it is gone.

  • Reviews from a competitor's staff, a former employee, or a diner reviewing the wrong location of a group are common and reportable.
  • Reviews used as leverage for a comped meal violate conflict-of-interest rules, and the message where the demand was made is the evidence.
  • Enter your average cheque and your weekly cover count in the calculator above to see what one fresh one-star costs in a month.

Buyer psychology

What earns buyer trust in restaurants

When choosing a restaurant, consumers weigh authentic, high-volume reviews as the deciding signal between you and a competitor a single click away.

Recency wins

Buyers weigh reviews from the last 90 days most heavily. A stale 5-star profile still loses to a competitor with fresh momentum in restaurants.

Volume signals safety

Prospects use raw review count as a proxy for legitimacy. Below 25 reviews, most local buyers filter your listing out entirely.

Response builds trust

How you respond to a 1-star review says more than the review itself. Silence reads as guilt, measured accountability reads as leadership.

One bad review, filtered forever

A single unaddressed 1-star can suppress restaurants local pack rankings and cut click-through by 30% or more.

Compliance-first

ToS-aligned, defensible growth for restaurants

The rules that apply to you

What the platforms and regulators actually say about restaurants

Every statement below is sourced. Read them before you decide how to handle a review.

5-9% per star

A one-star rating change moves revenue by a measurable amount

Michael Luca's Harvard Business School study of independent restaurants found a one-star increase in Yelp rating associated with a 5 to 9 percent increase in revenue. The finding is restaurant-specific, and it is the closest peer-reviewed measure of what a rating is worth to a restaurant.

Source: Harvard Business School · Michael Luca, 2016

Off topic

Complaints about things you do not control are reportable

Reviews about a third-party delivery driver, a ticketing site, the weather or another venue with a similar name are off topic under Google's published policy, and that is the ground the filing uses.

Source: Google Maps Help

16 CFR Part 465

Buying reviews to bury a bad one is a federal violation, not a shortcut

Since October 21, 2024 the FTC rule on consumer reviews bans fake reviews, insider reviews presented as customer reviews, and paying for positive or negative reviews, with civil penalties available per violation. For a restaurant that leaves two lawful moves: earn real reviews, and report the ones that break platform policy.

Source: U.S. Federal Trade Commission, 2024

Policy grounds only

Google removes reviews that break a policy, not reviews you dislike

Google's own help documentation says any review can be reported but only content that violates its policies is eligible for removal. That is why a case starts by matching the wording to a named policy: fake engagement, off topic, impersonation, harassment, personal information or conflict of interest.

Timeline

What happens after a restaurant opens a removal case

Nothing here is a promise of removal, because that decision belongs to the platform. Most Google removals take 7–21 days; Yelp and other platforms typically take 60–90 days. Complex cases use a Custom Care Plan with their own timeline.

  1. Day 0 · Free scan and eligibility read

We pull the live review or page from Google and Yelp and TripAdvisor, quote it verbatim, and say which policy it breaks. If nothing breaks a rule we say so and take no fee.

  2. Days 1-3 · Filing with the reservation record

Where no booking, ticket or check exists for the reviewer, that goes in first. Where the complaint is about something the venue does not control, the off-topic ground carries the report.

  3. Platform moderation

Google evaluates reports against its prohibited and restricted content policy; most Google removals take 7–21 days. Yelp and other platforms typically take 60–90 days. The platform decides the timing.

  4. Days 10-21 · Appeal where the first report is declined

A declined report is not the end. Google provides an appeal route for reviews it decides to keep, and a second filing that cites a different policy ground and better evidence is often what moves it.

  5. Day 30 (Google) / Day 90 (Yelp & other platforms): refund deadline

Upfront fees are refunded after our review if a Google review is not removed within 30 days of payment, or a Yelp review or other-platform item is not removed within 90 days. No claim or form is required. Refunds are issued within 5 business days of the deadline.

Before you start

What a restaurant needs before starting a removal

The start form takes a few minutes if you have these four things in front of you. Nothing else is required to open the case.

  1. The exact link to the review or page

On Google, open the review, use the three-dot menu and choose Share to copy its direct link. On Yelp, use the share icon under the review. For a harmful page, paste the full URL from the address bar.

  2. Your business name exactly as it appears on the profile

Use the restaurant name from the Google or Yelp listing that carries the review. Groups with several locations need the specific location, not the brand.

  3. Why the item breaks the platform's rules

One or two sentences is enough. Typical grounds for a restaurant: the reviewer never dined with you, the review is about a different location, a competitor or former employee posted it, or it names a server with accusations it does not support.

  4. Your preferred payment option

Pay upfront: $397 for Google, $697 for Yelp, or $497 for another site or harmful link. Pay upon removal: save a card, pay $0 today, and pay $50 more per item only once each removal is documented. No refund term applies because nothing is charged before removal. Pay upfront. If the specific Google review is not removed within 30 days of payment, or a Yelp review or other-platform item is not removed within 90 days of payment, we refund the removal fee to your original payment method. No claim or form needed. We review and issue it within 5 business days.

Restaurants review removal FAQs

A review claims food poisoning from a night we have no reservation or receipt for. Can it come down?+

A review describing a visit that did not happen fails the genuine-experience rule on Google and Yelp. We document the absence of any reservation, receipt or order and file on that basis. If the reviewer did eat with you, a food-poisoning claim is an opinion about their experience and stays.

Does Yelp remove reviews, or just filter them?+

Yelp removes reviews that violate its content guidelines and also filters reviews it does not recommend. A removal case at $697 targets a documented violation. If the specific Yelp review is not removed within 90 days of payment, we refund the removal fee to your original payment method. No claim or form needed. We review and issue it within 5 business days. Pay upon removal: save a card, pay $0 today, and pay $50 more per item only once each removal is documented. No refund term applies because nothing is charged before removal.

A diner demanded a free meal or they would leave a one-star, then did. What now?+

Keep the message. Reviews used as leverage violate conflict-of-interest rules on Google and Yelp, and a documented demand is one of the strongest reports we file.

How long does restaurants review removal typically take?+

Most Google removals: 7–21 days. Yelp and other platforms: typically 60–90 days. The platform decides the timing. Complex cases involving defamation, legal escalation, coordinated attacks, or many items across platforms are quoted individually through the Custom Care Plan, with their own timeline.

Do you remove legitimate negative reviews?+

No. We only pursue reviews that violate a platform's Terms of Service: fake, off-topic, defamatory, extortive, or conflict-of-interest. Legitimate complaints are addressed via a response strategy, not deletion.

Is this compliant with FTC and platform policy?+

Yes. Every workflow (outreach, invitations, responses, removal appeals) is aligned with the FTC Endorsement Guides and each platform's ToS. We keep audit-ready logs of every action.

What does restaurants review removal cost?+

Pay upfront: $397 Google, $697 Yelp, or $497 other sites and harmful links.

What if a removal request is denied?+

We escalate through documented appeal channels. Upfront fees are refunded after our review if a Google review is not removed within 30 days of payment, or a Yelp review or other-platform item is not removed within 90 days. Pay upon removal: save a card, pay $0 today, and pay $50 more per item only once each removal is documented. No refund term applies because nothing is charged before removal.

Sources for Restaurants+

Every statistic cited inline on this page is drawn from the following industry sources. Citations remain inline alongside each figure so context stays with the claim.

  1. Peer-reviewed study of independent restaurants finding a one-star rating increase associated with a 5 to 9 percent revenue increase. Restaurant-specific, cited only where the business model is comparable.

  2. The policy list a removal report has to cite: fake engagement, off-topic content, impersonation, harassment, personal information and conflicts of interest.

  3. Federal rule effective October 21, 2024. Bans fake or AI-generated reviews, reviews by insiders presented as customers, and buying positive or negative reviews. This is why removal has to be argued on policy grounds instead of countered with bought reviews.

  4. Google's own documentation of the report route: any review can be reported, only reviews that break a content policy are eligible for removal, and the decision is Google's.

  5. How do I report a review?Yelp for Business Support Center

Yelp states that reported content is evaluated by its moderators and that the evaluation may take several days, with an email sent when it is done.
